Newfoundland & Labrador

MARRIAGE LICENCE
  • Fees: $50 (License fees are non-refundable)
  •  Either may apply in person but must provide the following documents for each of you
    • Proof of age Gov't ID: birth certificates or passports
    • Photo ID: drivers license (or age of majority card)
    • If under 19, bring a birth certificate & written parental consent & an affidavit by parents/guardians swearing to age
  • Note: Unlike other provincial licenses, this license is only good for 30 days 
  • Each must complete an affidavit & have their signatures witnessed by the Commissioner of Oaths, a Justice of the Peace or a Notary Public
  • If previously married, divorced or widowed outside of Canada, (but not out of the province) a Newfoundland lawyer needs to provide a certified letter that you are eligible to marry in Newfoundland.

  • The Licence needs the following information
    •  Both parties must provide their parents' full names and birth places 
    •  Each partners SIN numbers,
  • No photocopies of documents is accepted
    • Originals or certified copies only
  • This license gets signed by the following at your wedding
    • Yourselves (the 2 people getting married)
    • Your officiant or religious ceremony leader (Minister, Priest, Imam, ,Rabbi etc.)
    • Your 2-witnesses and is then sent to the government by your Minister/ Priest/ Rabbi or officiant (within 48 hours) to confirm the wedding took place
  • Waiting Period: 4-days between application and issuance of marriage license
    • 4-more days between getting your license & the eligibility of having your ceremony

CERTIFICATE OF MARRIAGE


MARRY AFTER DIVORCE, DISSOLUTION OR DEATH
  • WHEN YOU APPLY for your license, bring with you
    • Your original Certificate of Marriage
    • Certified Death Certificate 
    • Proof of divorce or dissolution of union (court certified copies)
      • Absolute Decree 
      • judgement of dissolution from original court
      • Certificate of Divorce
      • If divorced outside of Canada (and the documents are in a different language) you need to include a certified letter from a practicing lawyer in the province you apply, stating your are eligible to get married

  • THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
    • The only way out of a marriage is divorce
    • Original or certified documents only (your papers will be returned to you)
    • If the original documents are in a language other than English, (English or French in Quebec) a certified translation is needed
    • Newfoundland & Labrador has specifications
      • If divorced outside of Canada (and the documents are in a different language) you need to include a certified letter from a practicing lawyer in the province you apply, stating your are eligible to get married

WHO CAN MARRY US
  • Religious service: your registered religious representative of your choice or your congregation  
  • Civil service: Officiants who have been vetted by your province already
