Ontario

MARRIAGE LICENCE
  • Fees: $100-$125 (License fees are non-refundable)
    • fees vary by city & region within Ontario
  • Either may apply in person but most provide the following documents for each of you
    • Proof of age Gov't ID: birth certificates or passports
    • Photo ID: drivers license (or age of majority card)
    • If under 18, bring written parental consent 
      • You need to be at least 16 to get married in Ontario
    • Relevant immigrant status card, treaty status card, Canadian citizenship card etc.
    • If you were divorced outside of Canada, written & certified authorization from the Minister of Consumer & Commercial Relations  (See below)
  •  The Licence will expire 90 days (3-months) after issued
  • The Licence needs the following information
    •  Both parties must provide their parents' full names and birth places 
    •  Each partners SIN numbers,
  • No photocopies of documents is accepted
    • Originals or certified copies only
  • This license gets signed by the following at your wedding
    • Yourselves (the 2 people getting married)
    • Your officiant or religious ceremony leader (Minister, Priest, Imam, ,Rabbi etc.)
    • Your 2-witnesses and is then sent to the government by your Minister/ Priest/ Rabbi or officiant (within 48 hours) to confirm the wedding took place

CERTIFICATE OF MARRIAGE


MARRY AFTER DIVORCE, DISSOLUTION OR DEATH
  • WHEN YOU APPLY for your license, bring with you
    • Your original Certificate of Marriage
    • Certified Death Certificate 
    • Proof of divorce or dissolution of union (court certified copies)
      • Absolute Decree 
      • judgement of dissolution from original court
      • Certificate of Divorce

  • THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
    • The only way out of a marriage is divorce
    • Original or certified documents only (your papers will be returned to you)
    • If the original documents are in a language other than English, (English or French in Quebec) a certified translation is needed
    • Ontario has the following specifications 
      • If you were married & divorced in another country you need authorization for a marriage license from the Minister of consumer & Business Services
        • Must send the Office of the Register General: 
          • completed & signed Marriage License Application Form
          • Statement of Sole Responsibility Form for each divorce (signed by each of you) This form acknowledges the Ontario courts may still not recognize your previous divorce(s) and therefore your eligibility to get married
          • Document of proof from your divorce (Certificate of Divorce, Absolute Decree or original court judgement of dissolution)
          • A legal opinion from an Ontario lawyer, why the divorce/ annulment etc. should be recognized and you should be eligible to marry
